Project funded to encourage parental involvement in young children's learning

For immediate release: Wednesday 2 May 2007

PEAL project granted additional funds

The Parents, Early Years and Learning project (PEAL) has been granted additional funds to deliver training to practitioners that will encourage parents to get more involved with children under three’s early learning and development.

The funding comes from the Workforce Development strand of the Department for Education and Skills Early Learning Partnerships programme, and will enable PEAL to begin a second phase of training to practitioners  from children’s centres and other early years settings between June 2007 and March 2008.

Sue Owen, Director of the Early Childhood Unit based at NCB, said: ‘Parents are a child’s first, and most enduring, educators and by supporting the parental contribution to children’s learning we can make a real difference to children’s educational and social outcomes. How children feel about themselves, how they view the world, how well they relate to others, how well they do at school and how well adjusted they are, can all be linked to the quality of the relationship with their parents, particularly in the early years of life’.

PEAL is led by the National Children’s Bureau, Coram Family and the London Borough of Camden, and delivers training to practitioners to encourage parental involvement with children’s early learning and development.
