Parents' feedback on REAL Year 2

Do you do anything in a different way to help your child learn – or more often now?

We read more stories/ books/ tell more stories
I buy them books now, we go to the library, we make books together
I make books more fun, I make sounds and make it interesting
Share more stories and talk about them more
Go to the library with all the children
We have a story every night
I point out the words in books more
I found new reading techniques that I use when I read to my sons
We re-tell the story using the puppets
I love listening to them read because reading is so important
He says ‘I know this story’ and he points to the words he knows

We sing more rhymes and songs
He sings at home more, he never did that before
He sings more rhymes – his favourite is twinkle, twinkle chocolate bar
He sings along with CBeebies
She does them over and over

We go for walks and look for numbers and letters
I ask him to read symbols and signs when we’re out
We look for logos on the way to nursery
Look for words and letters when we’re shopping
We talk about signs when we’re out and about
I point out labels when they’re out
We look at numbers and things and count a lot
We look at numbers and letters on cars and doors
As we walk to school we look at numbers on doors and cars, he can see 1-10 now
I’m collecting words for his scrapbook and I will keep it going
Melissa still tells me to slow down when she sees the slow sign on the road
I give him words and logos to find when I go shopping

I play/talk with him/her more
I spend more time with him
We talk about everything around us
I am more connected, we talk more and do more together
I play more with him and make up stories
I encourage him to talk more – to say what he can see
I use my language as well as English now
I talk more in my language

I include him/her in things I do more
I let him do thing with the baby – help me bath him and oil him
I don’t worry about mess any more
I let him cook with me
I do simple things now and that helps them learn – like filling buckets with water outside and giving them a paintbrush
We do more like baking and things
Before we never baked cakes but we do now
I take all my 3 children out more, REAL has given me that confidence – I go to parks and museums – before we watched too much TV
He plays less computer and does more with me
He joins in cooking with his sisters.  I was surprised at how good he is

We play more games and do jigsaw puzzles
I play more games and put all the ideas into practice
Play more games like the pairs one
We do that matching game – I wouldn’t have thought of that
We play more games with cards

We do more writing and drawing/painting/mark making
I let her do more writing now and I realise it doesn’t have to make sense to me
I provide things to mark make with all the time
Like making his name and cutting out letters

 use sticker books and buy drawing books

We make more things
I let them use scissors
We do more cutting and sticking and things
We do more art and craft things
We make more things like play dough

How have the home visits and events helped you and your child/ren?

All parents said that they had enjoyed being part of the project/ expressed thanks. Example comments:
The home visits have been great
The environmental print walk opened up a new world of words to us
We will miss the visits
We wish we had more visits
I wish we could have more visits as she talked more on the last one than she ever has before

It’s given me ideas to help my baby and younger children too -
His younger sister picks more things up too
My younger child is starting to show an interest in all the things she is doing
